I scream, you scream
“The only emperor is the emperor of ice-cream.”
-Wallace Stevens, a fan of 31 cent scoop night
Do phrases like “tight economic times” and “we’re in a tough recession” give you the willies? Do “recession-busting” deals make you want to dive under the covers and read copies of Popular Mechanics or Sassy?
No? Good. Otherwise I’d start worrying about you. Because honestly, who can turn down a good deal, recession or not? Installment loans and short term loans are good that way. But if that deal includes Baskin Robbins ice cream on Baskin Robbins 31 cent scoop night, wouldn’t you listen? Wouldn’t your mouth water? Provided your aren’t lactose intolerant, you would lick down into that delicious icy palace of creamy-good flavors. Admit it. You can’t resist. Neither can the spare change in your seat cushions.
31 flavors, 31 cents
Nathan Olivarez-Giles blogs for the Los Angeles Times that Baskin-Robbins, known for their “31 flavors,” is dropping per-scoop prices to 31 cents tonight, April 29. The occasion – aside from fighting back the recession with smiling faces – is to honor firefighters for the amazing work they have done saving lives, the security they bring us and our homes and the hope future hook and ladder stalwarts will bring to society.
Now mind you, you can’t just show up any old time and expect to enjoy this prodigious Baskin Robbins 31 cent discount. Get thee to a creamery between 5 to 10 p.m. at select stores. If you need to find one close to you, check out Baskin Robbins locations on their Web site. They’re also on Twitter (@baskinrobbins) and Facebook. Furthermore, if you want a text message reminder of the next time 31 Cent Scoop Night rolls around, text “scoop” to 31310.
A good cause
Proceeds from the 31 Cent Scoop Night sales will go toward a $100,000 donation to the National Volunteer Fire Council’s National Junior Firefighter Program. This program, according to Olivarez-Giles, “pairs young people with firefighters, rescue workers and emergency medical service workers to teach them about the various professions.” Apparently some Baskin-Robbins locations will even accept donations you wish to give to help local firehouses.
And ice cream is good for you!
"Mmmmm…"
Ezince Articles expert author Gene Millen writes that if you eat ice cream as part of a healthy diet, you can actually lose weight more quickly! His article refers to dietician Marsha Hudnall’s research in the matter.
Basically, it’s all about quantity. Don’t let Baskin Robbins 31 Cent Scoops derail your balanced diet. But don’t make ice cream the forbidden fruit you can’t help but covet, either.
“When we tell ourselves we can’t have something, we immediately focus our attention on what’s forbidden, which increases our desire and chances of losing control,” says Hudnall.
Get that good old calcium and lose weight
Ice cream provides calcium we need to be healthy. According to Hudnall,
Only four percent of women over 50 meet the daily 1,200 mg goal. The average female calcium intake is only 652 mg. Less than one third of men reach these same goals.
And get this. According to a recent study, people who were packing a few extra pounds but who also took a calcium supplement lost “38 percent more body fat than those who ate the same reduced-calorie diet without the supplement.”
Here’s how calcium helps
If your diet doesn’t include enough calcium, your body’s fat-burning ability is impaired. Fat cells then switch into stuff and bulge mode.
So if you eat the right amount of ice cream, you’re gaining valuable calcium while keeping fat at bay. Experts state that a one-half cup serving of no more than 125 calories is good. Unfortunately, that would mean only one scoop on 31 Cent Scoop Night. That’s better than nothing, eh?
